Sponge Painting
Supplies:
- Natural Marine Sponge or Cellulose Sponge
- Clean Water
- Acrylic Paint
- Paper Plate or Disposable Pie Tin
- Paper Towels
Instructions:
- If you are using a cellulose sponge, pinch or tear small pieces off the surface of the sponge to remove the straight edges. This will give an uneven, natural pattern to your sponge painting.
- Pour a small amount of paint onto the paper plate or pie tin.
- Dip your sponge into water and squeeze out the excess.
- Lightly dip one side of the sponge into paint. Blot off the excess paint on a paper towel.
- Gently press the sponge to the surface. Pick the sponge up, change position, and press to the surface again.
- Reload sponge with paint as needed. Be sure to always change the position of the sponge so that the same pattern is not repeated over the entire surface.
Hints:
- The key to successful sponge painting is light pressure and light paint.
- If you wish to sponge more than one color, allow each color to dry before applying the next.
- Too much water on the sponge will “muddy” your colors
