Sponge Painting

Supplies:
  • Natural Marine Sponge or Cellulose Sponge
  • Clean Water
  • Acrylic Paint
  • Paper Plate or Disposable Pie Tin
  • Paper Towels

Instructions:

  1. If you are using a cellulose sponge, pinch or tear small pieces off the surface of the sponge to remove the straight edges. This will give an uneven, natural pattern to your sponge painting.
  2. Pour a small amount of paint onto the paper plate or pie tin.
  3. Dip your sponge into water and squeeze out the excess.
  4. Lightly dip one side of the sponge into paint. Blot off the excess paint on a paper towel.
  5. Gently press the sponge to the surface. Pick the sponge up, change position, and press to the surface again.
  6. Reload sponge with paint as needed. Be sure to always change the position of the sponge so that the same pattern is not repeated over the entire surface.

Hints:

  • The key to successful sponge painting is light pressure and light paint.
  • If you wish to sponge more than one color, allow each color to dry before applying the next.
  • Too much water on the sponge will “muddy” your colors
